Our story

The Serbian Orthodox Youth of the Netherlands (SPOH) is a youth organization that operates with the blessing of His Grace Bishop Justin of Western Europe and under the patronage of the Diocese of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Western Europe.

The organization is intended for youth aged 16 to 35 within the parishes of the Serbian Orthodox Church in the Netherlands, as well as in Belgium and Luxembourg.

SPOH is dedicated to preserving and promoting the Orthodox faith, the Serbian language, culture, and traditions among Serbian youth; as well as to missionary work with youth of various nationalities who are interested in the Orthodox faith and/or Serbian culture, tradition, and language.
SPOH members therefore include Serbs, Dutch people, and individuals of various other nationalities. Due to the authentic Serbian Orthodox culture of hospitality and the strong desire to preserve the Serbian language and Cyrillic script, all communication within SPOH is conducted in three languages: Serbian, Dutch, and English.
The organizational structure of SPOH is such that all activities take place with the blessing of the bishop and the parish priests, as well as the priest responsible for youth ministry. The organization has a Board of Directors that coordinates all activities. In addition to the board, there are teams or individuals responsible for specific activities (such as the travel organizer, children’s camp team, social media team, etc.), and each parish also has a youth leader who acts as a link between the local youth, the parish priest, and the SPOH headquarters.

History

The formation of SPOH

The Serbian Orthodox Youth of the Netherlands (hereafter SPOH) was founded following a pilgrimage to Romania on the feast of Saint Petka, on October 27, 2022.
A group of 12 pilgrims (11 youth and 1 priest) from various Serbian Orthodox Church parishes in the Netherlands, with the blessing of Bishop Justin, traveled to Iași to venerate the relics of Saint Mother Paraskeva and celebrate her feast day (according to the Julian calendar).

During the pilgrimage, they met with Romanian Orthodox youth from Iași and visited many holy sites together, not only in Iași but throughout the Moldavian region. The Romanian youth and their spiritual father, Father Nikodim, introduced the Serbian pilgrims to their youth organization and its activities. This encounter inspired the idea to establish SPOH in the Netherlands. From that moment on, SPOH has followed the blessing of Saint Mother Paraskeva, who became its patroness and spiritual protector. The Romanian youth were invited to visit Serbian parishes in the Netherlands to continue this beautiful friendship.
After returning to the Netherlands, Miss Jelena Vitković, who showed great initiative and enthusiasm for youth work, began gathering more young people. During the parish feast of Saint Simeon the Myrrh-Gusher in Utrecht on February 26, 2023, with many youth present from all over the country, the idea of founding SPOH was presented to Bishop Justin. He warmly approved it and gave his blessing for the official establishment of the organization, which would function across the Serbian Orthodox Church parishes in the Netherlands, with its center in Rotterdam.
Jelena Vitković became the first president, and Father Krsto Stanišić became the spiritual father of SPOH.
With great enthusiasm, SPOH began organizing youth gatherings, lectures, and parish visits, and its membership grew rapidly. Soon after, a group of seven Romanian Orthodox youth paid a return visit to the Netherlands and participated in the first Serbian Orthodox children’s camp, organized by SPOH on May 20–21, 2023, sharing their 30 years of experience in organizing children’s camps.
This visit was a turning point in SPOH’s development, and the organization of children’s camps became one of its most important and recognizable activities.
SPOH also began organizing pilgrimages abroad, creating connections with Orthodox youth from other countries. For example, a group visited the Polish Orthodox Church and attended a youth gathering at the Suprasl Monastery in eastern Poland. They also visited the New Gračanica Monastery in Illinois, near Chicago (USA), where SPOH youth took part in a Serbian Orthodox youth camp and established strong ties with the local youth.
Going forward, SPOH continues to organize fellowship events, lectures, sports activities, children’s camps, and also hosts students from the Faculty of Orthodox Theology in Belgrade.

Bishop

Bishop Justin (Jeremić)

Bishop Justin (Jeremić) was born on June 22, 1982, in Ruma, to father Miloš and mother Olga. He completed elementary school in his hometown and, with the blessing of Bishop Vasilije of Srem, enrolled in the Seminary of Saint Arsenije of Srem in Sremski Karlovci.

His dedication to theology, love for liturgy, and his inclination toward monastic life and asceticism shaped the future path of the young seminarian. Thus, Bishop Vasilije decided to tonsure him into the small schema monastic order in March 2002, near the end of his fifth year of seminary, at the Velika Remeta Monastery in Fruška Gora. Soon after, on the Feast of the Annunciation, Monk Justin was ordained to the rank of hierodeacon at the Krušedol Monastery. Upon graduating from seminary as the top student of his class, and upon the recommendation of his diocesan bishop, he enrolled at the Moscow Theological Academy. Before leaving for Moscow, he was ordained a hieromonk in October 2002 at the Velika Remeta Monastery.
With the blessing of Bishop Vasilije of Srem and the Holy Assembly of Bishops, in 2008 he was sent for postgraduate studies at the Theological Faculty in Athens, where he remained until 2013. At that time, with the blessing of Bishop Luka of Western Europe and in response to a pastoral need, he moved to Paris. He served as parish priest in Lyon and Dijon, as well as in the parish of Saint Sava in Paris. On the Feast of Theophany in 2015, he was awarded the rank of protosyncellus, and on October 30, 2016, he was elevated to the rank of archimandrite.
At the regular spring session of the Holy Assembly of Bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church held in Belgrade from April 24 to May 29, 2021, he was elected Vicar Bishop of Hvostan. At the regular session of the same Assembly held in Sremski Karlovci and Belgrade from May 15 to 21, 2022, he was elected Bishop of Western Europe.

Priest

Presbyter Krsto Stanišić

Presbyter Krsto Stanišić is the priest in charge of SPOH, and his duties are: to assist and ensure that the activities of SPOH are carried out in accordance with the blessing of the Church, to serve as a link between the clergy and the SPOH Board, and to provide spiritual support to the youth.

In addition to his responsibilities for SPOH, Father Krsto is the parish priest of the Saint Simeon the Myrrh-Streamer parish in Utrecht.
He was born in Nikšić on November 6, 1989, into a priestly family, as the eldest of five children. He spent his childhood in Nikšić, Cetinje, Podgorica, and Danilovgrad. He completed high school and theological seminary, after which he enrolled at the Orthodox Theological Faculty of the University of Belgrade. Upon completing his undergraduate and master’s studies, he went to Munich for further specialization.
In 2021, he married a Dutch woman, Maryse van den Heuvel. With the blessing of the late Metropolitan Amfilohije and Bishop Luka, he was ordained a priest that same year and came to the Netherlands to begin his missionary work.
With the blessing of Bishop Justin, in 2023 he was entrusted with the spiritual care of SPOH.

Treasurer

Marija Barjaktarović

The treasurer of SPOH is Marija Barjaktarović. She is currently studying political science in The Hague and works at a bank alongside her studies, which gives her a strong understanding of finances. She lives in Utrecht but spends every summer in Montenegro. Even outside of the holiday season, she often visits, as she loves the sea and the sun, which she misses greatly in the Netherlands.

Since childhood, she has been connected to the church in Utrecht, where she met Father Krsto, who introduced her to SPOH. For Marija, SPOH is a beautiful and meaningful organization for children from the diaspora, like herself. She believes it is important that SPOH connects young people with their homeland, culture, history, and people.
Through her work with SPOH, she has also deepened her knowledge of the faith, which has brought her closer to God. As treasurer, she is committed to ensuring financial stability, so that SPOH can organize activities that offer other young people the same wonderful experiences she has had.

President

Helena Brons

Since 2025, Helena Brons (baptized as Jelena) has been the president of SPOH. She joined the organization in 2024 and immediately felt a strong connection through her love for the faith, culture, and homeland. As a child, she didn’t have the opportunity to attend Serbian school, folklore, or youth camps, which is why she finds it especially important that these opportunities now exist for today’s youth.

She has been active in the parish in Zaandam from a young age and has sung in the church choir since the age of fifteen. In addition to her studies in Amsterdam, she works as a debate and argumentation coach at secondary schools and MBO institutions. She brings with her prior experience in leadership roles, which she now gladly uses for the benefit of the Serbian community in the diaspora.

Secretary

Katarina Gajdobranski

Katarina Gajdobranski is a master’s student of architecture from Novi Sad. She was born and raised in Serbia, in a family that cherishes love for God, faith, and the Church. She moved away from home for the first time when she spent two years living in Venice, Italy, during her studies. There, she first experienced the importance of the Serbian Orthodox community abroad, which soon felt like a new family to her.

Now, Katarina lives in the Netherlands, where she has joined the Serbian Orthodox community and the organization SPOH. As a secretary, she is dedicated to organizing Orthodox events, meeting young people of the Serbian Orthodox faith, and sharing the experiences she gained in her parish in Novi Sad.
